Why IRS for the TRX700XX?
« on: September 30, 2007, 06:04:25 PM »
Kind of curious why they decided to go this route with this machine.  Seems like they are not going after the Raptor but looking to create a new niche - a true big bore IRS machine with a manual transmission.

Seems this will be a first in a long time for Honda, bravo.

I wonder if they will release a solid axle version though.

They already own the mx track with the 450r. This could be the ultimate woods racing weapon.

While I've never ridden an IRS equipped machine, I make many spirited rides through the woods - usually more than 40 miles (4 hours) at a time.  While I can't imagine anything handling/breaking any better than a 450R, I sometimes wish the engine was a little less peaky and more torquey.

This is direction I was hoping Honda was going to take with the 700.  A slightly more tame/longer lasting version of the 450R with the same handling charecteristics.

Exactly, why release two machines that will compete with one another? They released an entirely different for quad for an entirely different purpose/crowd.

Am I the only one dissapointed with the IRS? I havent ridden it yet so Im not going to make any assumptions, but the thing weighs 508 lbs. Thats heavy in my book, 60% heavier than my trike. I know thats kinda apples to oranges but i think it would do well to knocked another 50 - 75 lbs off.

If I'm not mistaken the 508 pound mark is with all fluids and a full tank of gas. I'm guessing the dry weight of it should be about 40-50 lbs heavier than a Raptor 700.

Like Outlwd said, it really isn't as heavy as it seems BUT I think Honda could have made it a little bit lighter. 30-40lbs less would have been great. But as long as they make it seem light and it handles like a light quad, I will be happy. Because I am not gonna be taking this quad off any crazy jumps.

I think they wanna be the first for the new niche they are making and it seems the IRS is alot more complex and costly to develop/build than a straight axle so I wouldn't doubt if they pump out a straight axle version in a year or two after getting all the veterans that are looking for the new toy to buy this version first. xD

I'm gonna go for this for now then likely get a 450R later for racing and for a girlfriend to try and chase me on my 700.

There is no point in releasing a solid axle version of the 700xx because that would basically become a Honda 450r with the xr650 engine. The 700xx is made for a specific market and it will dominate that market... Hopefully  :)

I actually prefer the IRS for the trails and stuff here in Fl. But, it wont do donuts like the raptor or any other solid axle machine does. Mine likes to grab the outside tire and before you can stop, over you go. Man that hurts too...LOL

I do like to see my friends on thier Raptors bouncing all over the whoops and I am enjoying the ride........

I do not get it.  I was out doing donuts on my 700xx and they were just as tight as a straight axle quad.  I mean I probably was making a 4 - 5 foot circle with no problem.

This machine to me has been the best.  I've ridden the 700 Raptor and It did not have the low end pull that the 700xx has.  The 700xx walked all over the stock raptor.  Now if you add an exhaust and reprogram the raptor you have a totally different result but I'd bet that if you did the same to the 700xx you would see similar results..

I've read the magazines and their test results.  Bull dung on them.  When you take a race rider and their expectations of a machine, they will not say anything good because they are Yamaha backed.  Take a biker that is looking for a wooded, mountain, all terrain bike and let them test the bike and you will see a totally different result.

This bike was built for the Utility rider wanting a sporty bike.  The bike has proved itself as just that and with the first year Baja win.
Get over it Raptor fans.  Get a raptor with IRS, then you would see the difference.

Maybe I am being too easy and need to get the wheels spinning quicker. Plus the stock tires hook up much better than the worn out ones that were on the raptor

I agree the bak tyres hook up nicely on the XX  only thing is they wear down fast !!!
