Elka shocks
« on: August 25, 2008, 06:01:42 PM »
Anyone else besides me think the rears are a little too stiff for someone that weighs 168lbs?  I ride at tower city and there are little rocks, BIG rocks, and every size of freaking rock in between littered everywhere and they still manage to beat the snot outa me, ESPECIALLY when going a little slower, say 10-20mph.

Was thinking about a set of elkas, 1150 shipped if I get them with the fiances rear elka for her VForce.

I put on a set of Elka's yesterday. They are triple rate, comp/reb adjustable with piggyback fronts and remote rears. They do ride a lot smoother over what I have been over yesterday evening, but that wasn't anything big and rocky. I lowered the quad about an inch and a half or two inches which did help it corner and not feel as tippy. Overall, I very pleased and I think that time and adjustments will prove to make things even better.

BTW, Hello to everyone from West Texas...

Did you get a Power Commander with the HMF muffler?  How does it feel from stock?

Take that thing over some bumps, I want to order mine soon if they prove worth it, in time for my honeymoon.

I actually put a Powercommander on it yesterday. It was really popping on deceleration and felt really lean and hot on top when I was running closer to wide open.

I put the Dynojet map for stock airfilter with lid off and stock pipe with baffle removed. I just richened the top end about 6% and it feels more lively and responsive. Stock, the top end felt kinda lazy, but this has helped that felling.

On the shocks, I haven't been through any rocky stuff yet, but I have been through ruts and tree logs and stumps. It is way smoother than the stock suspension. Elka always says their shocks will increase travel over stock; the new fronts visibly have more travel than the stockers, but the rear looked like they travel about like the stock rears. I would imagine this is to not "over-travel" the CV joints.

The shocks are longer than I expected, btw. The rears are something like 20.5" extended, and the fronts are about 18.5" extended. My longtravel Elka's on my 450r are just 19.5", so I'm impressed with the stock length and travel on this 700xx.

The cornering is also much better with the quad being lowered. I have found that I can "flick" the rear around more now with less "tippyness" than with the stock suspension. It seems more willling to slide the rear rather than push on the front through a corner.

Overall, I 'm exceptionally pleased with the outcome of the Elka's. They made much more difference for the 700xx's handling than previous experience with 400ex's and 450r's with aftermarket suspension. It doesn't make it handle like a solid axle, but it's not supposed to be a solid axle bike. It does make charging through angle ruts and rough stuff that would cross up a solid axle bike an afterthought.

I'll ht some tighter trails today and see how it handles that...

Man, I'm hatin this, but I've got to sell the quad and all the extras in those pics to generate some cash for the farm... >:(

I posted a for sale in the general section here and on the classified at atvriders.com.

I thought I'd plug my add and help someone get some deals on nearly new extras and the whole quad!

Thanks again, Chris.
