ITP Wheels and tires
« on: October 10, 2008, 08:03:40 AM »
ITP has wheels and tires for the XX now. Unfortunately they are not making an 11-inch rim. You can get nice sand tire kits with 12-inch rims. I still don't know about the 10-inch rim on the XX. Seems like it will be awfully tight against the a-arms and linkage.

If ITP is putting out an 10" wheel...then they must have figured out the correct offset.

I'm sure this 10" wheel will give the desired results we all want with the added bonus of a larger tire selection.

Kuddos to ITP.

There isn't  a lot of tires in the 22-inch height however. If you are going to go smaller, then yeah, it opens up more options. Personally, I'm going to stick with the 11-inch rim and 22-inch tire.

Being a n00bie at this... What are the pro and cons of a smaller and larger Rim / Tire combo? faster, slower, harder on the bike?

It can change the final gearing, Going with larger tires on a stock XX is not recommended. The gearing is a bit high already and a stock bike would not perform well on taller tires. The 10" rim and tire combo's have downfalls also but can work. Most of the 10" rims have to high of an offset making the bike really wide.
I do not fear what the future holds for me, I am not afraid to die.

The tire/wheel combo play a really big role in the handling of your quad. Basically:

smaller tires/bigger rims = less wheel roll, better handling on straight surfaces
bigger tires/smaller rims = more wheel roll, worse handling on straights but better in the rocks, it is also softer and better for jumping (in some cases)

bigger wheel/tire combo = higher gearing and higher top speed
smaller wheel/tire combo = lower gearing and lower top speed

Best thing to do for all around riding is find a fair balance in between. That is usually what the quad comes with stock.

I've been racing the 10" ITP wheel and 20" x 11" - 10 H-D since the rim was first available.  My opinion, for what it is worth... the slightly shorter wheel gave me better balance in tight turns (less wheel sag/sway) and the low end power was noticeable, pulling the front end up out of the corners and start gates.  I didn't feel any high end power loss and was actually able to quickly get speed for bigger doubles/ tables/ etc.  It also provided less bounce when landing big jumps.  Lastly, the wider and more flat design of the tire gave me some extra width and a firmer base in the corners.  The loss in clearance was minimal, and still much higher than any other straight axle sport quad.  Check out my quad at: http://www.loopd.com/members/Regulator/Home.aspx .

I have these with paddles on them for my 700xx, I'm not pleased with the wider offset and 1/4" clearance from the a-arm to the inside of the rim.

scuzz,

you are not happy with your wheels and sand tires.  What would you recommend?  I am looking for a set for a dunes trip coming up and need some input from anyone who has it!

Thanks!

No sand in south AL but i love my razrs on my itp SS rims.  Great traction on track and soft dirt!  I wish i would have gone with razr2s though
