I just got an email back from Ken Davie at DG on wether they are going to be getting the full nerf bars and front bumpers for the 700xx.  Here was his reply.

Curious as to how nerfs will mount on the XX without modifying the plastic a little. Any nerf that I've seen usually bolt onto the front of the engine/mount. That is totallly blocked by the plastic that runs over the front of the frame. Seems a shame to have to cut that apart !

Ok,

Well I am back from a long night of riding the 700xx on a pretty tight 1 mile long MX track.

I arrived around 5:00pm and I was the only one there so I had my change to get out on the track until everyone else was suppose to show-up at 6:00.  I thought I would try and get my 15 mile of motor break in done.  The track was pretty hard and packed as it had rained in the past and no one has been on it for over a week.

This track has allot of banked and flat corners.  Allot of them are very tight (allot tighter than what I usually ever see riding the trails).  This track also has a great table top, a huge (I am talking huge) Double down,  A steep double up, a ton of regular doubles ranging in sizes, a few singles and a long woops section.  There is also a alternate wrought around the double (the path in green).  Many things to say about this track but I will not bore you with any more details.

I am not a pro rider nor do I intend to be.  The friends that I ride with at this track race in our local district and are 1-2 in there standings and I am in no way as good or ever will be as good as them.  They are crazy fast.

It took me a few laps of just strolling along until I started to figure out what gears I needed and when.  This track can pretty much be ridden in 2nd and 3rd gear.  If I had more balls I could easily use 4th in the longer sections.  There are a few time that I tried 1st into the very tight corners if I came in to slow.

GEARING:
Here is my 2 cents on the gearing (keep in mind that I am an average joe rider and this is my first time out coming from my UTE)  First gear is very short and very snappy.  1st gear makes the front end seam very light.  This will be great for trail riding to get you over obstacles.  2nd gear is a very good gear for quite a bit of speed and you can bring it into a tight corner at very low speeds.  Coming into the tight corners in second you will need to keep the revs going (not a problem and I never stalled mine).  2nd gear would be better if it was a little taller (not a lot just a little more).  3rd gear is an interesting gear and I have not quite got that one down yet.  There is a tom of power in third.  I believe it is a taller gear.  I used third gear after coming out of a corner and then going down a straight (purely awesome feel of power).  I started getting pretty good using third around some of the wider turns in the upper part of the track.  The nice thing about third is it is allot smoother than second for going around the corners.  When going around the wider corners in second it is so snappy that the front starts to feel to light and you keep steeling weight from the front tires.  I have not even used 4th or 5th gear yet.  Over all this is a very tight track with only a couple of spots that you can let it breath.

POWER:
Plenty of power.  Very smooth power.  It did feel smoother than the 2008 Suzuki 450 that I rode.  I do however think that it is a little corked up from the factory.  Not that it is not awesome the way it is....it just seams like there is something hiding

JUMPING:
All I can say is WOW.  This thing sails through the air.  And the landings........WWWWOOOOOWWW.  Completely smooth and effortless.  I even came down nose first a couple of times and it landed just fine.  With my 400ex I would have hit my helmet visor on the front bumper LOL.  I never bottomed the rear out.  The front shocks...well lets just say that they would be great on the trails but they are not at all meant for an MX track.  I bottomed my Front shock out a few times.  Mainly when I was being to much of a pansy and not getting enough speed to clear the Doubles and mainly the double up.  The machine could very very easily do them without any effort...it was just the pansy rider behind the handle bars LOL.  Also note that my front shocks are straight from the factory at the softest setting.  Next time I will stiffen them up and see if there is any difference.  All in all the thing is awesome for jumping and the front shocks suck for MX riding. Rezzies in the front would have been nice. But for trail riding the front shock will be excellent.  I did take my friends 2008 Suzuki 450 Quad Racer out for a lap to compare the jumping.  I think I went over one jump with his and scared myself to death with it so I make up my mind that I would take the 700xx any day over the SRA for jumping.  Not saying that the SRA is not better at jumping, but the IRS is way more forgiving for the non flat landings.  Riding the SRA around the track felt like riding a stage coach without suspension and the 700xx felt like a Cadillac...Seriously.... The 700xx is way comfy and very smooth at jumping and all around everything.  Also take note not to let off the gas completely if you are in the are in Third gear, It felt like it was going to stall the motor...this could be due to the motor being new and being very tight.  It never happened to me but it seamed like it was going to do it.  It never did that in 1st or second.  Keep in mind that this was only on a long steep down hill jump and and through the air sailing jump :).

CORNERING:
Keep in mind that this is an IRS and it will never corner like an SRA.  Well I would have to say that this thing sticks like glue in the very tight stuff and it is very hard to get it to break loose.  It is almost like it is on rails.  In the wider turn in the upper portion of the track I could get the back to break loose but I could not get it to do it in the very tight stuff.  Here are a few issues that will help.  First of all my handle bars are tilted back to far and I could not get my body weight up far enough to get more weight on the front tires.  I am going tilt my bars up father and this should help allot.  Also I need to stiffen up the suspension and this should also help allot.  I will try these next time and see what difference this makes.  Understand that this was some pretty hard packed dirt track with a small layer of loose stuff towards the end of the day.  It did get better as the track started getting more loose dirt from the other riders.  I did take my friends 2008 Suzuki 450 out to just hit the corners to compare the cornering ability.  Wow... the SRA is defiantly better at getting around the corner.  But sometimes it was almost to much and you had to let off the gas to keep it from coming around.  Coming out of the corner is where the IRS shines compared to the SRA.  The IRS just hooks up and here you are getting 100 percent traction with a wheelie coming out (if you are in second) compared to the SRA just spinning.  I do believe with some tweaking this thing will be allot better.  I also need to get more nerve to give it more gas through the corners.  It was just glues so much that I was afraid it might want to buck me of.  When it did cut loose it was awesome.  I know it can do it as I could do it perfectly on my Sportsman 800.  Allot of it is just the transfer of weight witch can be corrected by suspension, rider position, and power distribution..

FINAL THOUGHTS:
I am very very happy with my new quad.  I am very happy that I did not get the Outlaw.  The fit and finish on this thing is perfect in every way.  If you are going to race PRO MX get an SRA for the speed in the corners, but personally I think SRA's suck for jumping... the SRA are just not as forgiving but they are awesome jumpers if you land correctly.  I would like to note that I think the IRS would be able to out corner an SRA in a wet or rough corner condition???? The 700xx will be a blast on the trails and it is defiantly twice the bike my 400ex was.  If you are going to race it I would defiantly put some money into some new front shocks.... without a question.  I never had any issues with the seat that was mention in one of the reviews.  I never had it stall on me as mentioned in the reviews.  I will be getting Full Nerf bars and a front bumper.  I am also planning on getting a K&N Filter for it.  Mellow ???? I don,t think so...  After riding the SRA and the IRS back to back....You could not pay me enough to trade this in for an SRA....there is just nothing that compares to the ride quality of the 700xx in the Sport class.  (except maybe the Outlaw IRS, I would like to compare the ride quality of them back to back)

Hope I did not bore you and please forgive my grammar as I did not read back through this to correct my publisher is on vacation lol.

There is my 2 cents so far. Feel free to ask me any questions.

The 700xx is a great machine and you will love it.

HPB, is that a "Cycle City" sticker on your front fender? Where do you live? There's a Cycle City in Erie Pa. kinda close to me.

Any way, thanks for the info, I'm kind of suprised Honda didn't put rezzies on the front shocks too (ala 450R) maybe next years up-grade?  ;D
I like the statement where you say the XX is twice what your 400EX is, and I ride a Z400 so they're comparable. The XX must be a hell of a machine!  :o

Did any of your friends ride your XX? What were their thoughts?

Cycle City of Rochester, MN

Yes my friend that races a 2008 Suzuki 450 took it out for a spin.  He is a really good Rider and racer.  He commented on how much power it has and also stated that the front end seamed very light.  We determined that it felt light because the IRS rear grabs so well and there is allot of torque that the tires just stick to the dirt and all of the weight transfers to the rear of the machine witch then in return makes the front feel light.  I can now see why my 900 lbs Sportsman 800 did wheelies so well.  The plus side to the Sportsman weight is that the front is allot heavier witch in return makes the rear lighter and that is why I could power slide and corner the sportsman allot better.  I believe if I stiffen the rear up and rotate my handlebars farther forward so that I can lay into the front end of the 700xx more like I am use to  I can then get it to power slide a ton better.  There is a discussion about this already somewhere in here that someone already did this and it made a world of difference.  He also mentioned how smooth it was and the fact that the front shocks are pogo sticks for MX tracks :).  But he also agreed that they would be excellent for trail riding.  Keep in mind that I only bottomed out the front shocks a few times and it was on a pretty hard hit to the front.

Well, I just got back from a weekend trail ride at one of my favorite spots. This place has over 150 miles of mountain trails, everything from nice, groomed trails to rutted, rocky, and I mean ROCKY stuff. A lot of it is relatively tight and twisty, there are some very healthy hillclimbs, in a nutshell, you get a little of everything and the riding there is great. There was still some snow in areas, and it was pretty muddy in spots. So, on to my thoughts....
Keep in mind that I had been riding a Raptor for 5 years, so I was really used to it, it was like an old pair of your favorite shoes. I was pretty nervous too about riding the XX too hard in the woods right off the bat, cuz' it's pretty easy to end up wrapped around a tree or tag a small stump if you are not on top of your game. As we hit the trailhead, my group insisted that I lead, so I was already going to be pushing it more than I had planned. So I headed down the first trail, it is smooth, groomed, then tightens a bit into some nice turns.
First gear is definitely short, second was very nice. The bike handles very well. It is very nimble in the trees and turns very easily. The only time I felt it "push" was in a big wide sweeping corner. If you didn't go into it very fast and use some body english, it would definitely push a bit. The front end will come up on demand, even in third gear if you are going fast enough. The suspension worked very nice, although it did feel a little stiff in the rear. The power is smooth, it doesn't hit really hard, and it is a bit "linear", I guess. It really seems as though the exhaust is pretty corked up. As the day wore on, I rode it a bit harder, getting used to the bit of tippyness it has in real tight turns. Going thru the rocks was pretty sweet, I would go over stuff that I would normally hammer with my skidplate on the old Raptor, and I would just sail over it. I have to say this is the first time I have ever rode where my hands and forearms were more fatigued than my back. A set of Flexx bars would make this thing very smooth! After out first 3 hour ride, I was relatively pleased, but still not so sure about how I felt about the XX.
The main reason for my uncertainty was that thrid gear definitely has some warts. When I was riding, second gear worked pretty good, but when the trails opened up a bit I would hit third. Third gear is very wide, and if you kept on the throttle it was fine. But it does not like to lug down AT ALL. It will bog down real bad, and will not pull out of it if you let it get too far. So you have to downshift a lot more than you should have to. Hopefully opening up the exhaust and and reprogrammiing the EFI would help this? You could even get it to bog down a bit in second, although you could normally roll on the throttle and get it to pull out of it. When this first happened, I was pretty dissapointed. I could ride in third for 40-50% of the time if it didn't do this.

When we went out later that day, I was getting more used to the way she handled and started to like it more and more. I did notice on the fire roads that the engine does vibrate a little more than I thought it would at the higher RPMs. I started riding it harder and harder, and it seems to perform better in all aspects the harder you ride it. It does not have a stalling issue as was first reported, you can creep thru big rocks and stuff just fine. At the end of the day, I definitely felt better about my purchase.
Then yesterday morning, feeling good and refreshed I rode that sucker like I stole it. I got used to the bogging issue and how to handle it. A buddy on a Scrambler and myself took a two hour ride... non-stop at on the edge speed. I was loving it. I rode up this nasty ass trial with big ol' rocks (not rock crawling), and I could just pick my way up and thru them, without ever touching anything underneath. I rode it faster and faster, hard thru the turns, blasting thru the washouts and ruts, just having a blast.
At the end of the trip , I was very, very happy I bought it. It has good power with the potential to be great. It handles very well, I would have never EVER thought that it weighed as much as it does. Never did I feel that it was heavy at all. The suspension is very good in that environment. It is nimble, and it flies from turn to turn with ease.
I think this thing is a great trail machine. If something can be done about the bogging, it could be perfect. A buddy of mine said that there is a pretty good possibility that the low end circuit may just be too rich from the factory. I don't think it is a gearing issue, it is fuel delivery. In my opinion, changing the front sprocket would be a mistake, it would make first gear useless and second way too short.
All in all, it is  great machine. My only complaint is that black plastic gets trashed way too easy! Mine is definitely broke in, to say the least! Oh, well, it was beautiful for the three days I had it before I took it out anyway! Sorry I've rambled a bit here, it was a long, great weekend and I'm still draggin'!

Great review xx.  I can't wait to go on our annual Trail riding trip  :).  I would agree with you on the 3rd gear 100%.  Third gear has a huge amount of power if you are up to speed and RPM's, but it will bog down exactly the way you put it if you go into second gear speeds.

Keep the reviews coming  :)

Posterboy, what are your thoughts on a remedy for the bogging? I'm sure as more of these get out someone will figure out how to tune that out of it...I hope!

FYI - all...I only got that sucker into 5th once, and it is endless. You could wind that thing out FOREVER. I bet the top speed is pretty high on the XX, but you'll need a lot of "road" to get it!

700xx - Yes, you did tell me, and I'm glad that you were right!

And one other thing...If you ride up on the front of the seat like I do, and you are wearing a coat, make sure that you do something about your buttons, or you will scratch the hell out of the tank cover just like I did!

Not sure yet.  I would like to try adding a K&n filter and possibly see what it does with the lid removed.  There may be something simular to what the Suzuki 450 EFI has like the Cherry bomb that just plugs in.  Mite be able to play with the spark arrester a bit also.   There are a few things to try without spending allot.

 ;D

So today we rode for 30 miles in the wooded trails doing 2 to 15 mph crawling thru  wooded rutted trails.  I used second and third gear most of the time.  You can lug this bike down and it will respond with no problem.  Honda did it right for the utility/sport rider.  I do not know what every one else is complaining about but this bike is awesome.  It will fly when you want it to and it will crawl  in the most technical areas with no problem.  I am so glad that I bought this bike.    Oh yes it will lug down and when you hit the throttle it will just jump over in a wheelie the pot holes/mud holes that get in your way.  Also you do not get so tired and beat up riding this bike.

I only hope that everyone else is having as much fun as I am.

Take care and Happy Trails

We go to the Oregon Sand dunes in two weeks so I will be letting you know how the dunes are.

I would agree that you can get it to pull out of second when you lug it down, but in third gear, if you let it lug too far, mine will not pull out of it. The second day that I rode mine, the issue didn't seem as bad, or I was just getting used to it. EIther way, it is a relatively minor issue. My thoughts were that was the only thing from making this thing nearly perfect for trail riding. I heading out the weekend after Memorial Day for another 3-day riding trip...all mountain trails..I cant wait!!
